How are historic districts or special zoning requirements addressed in SolarAPP+?
Historic Districts & Special Zoning Areas
Historic districts and special zoning areas may have unique requirements for rooftop solar installations — such as restrictions on array placement, equipment type, or visibility from streets and walkways — that fall outside SolarAPP+'s standard approval criteria.
SolarAPP+ now supports this through ArcGIS layer integration. Jurisdictions can provide REST layers that enable two response options when a project address falls within a flagged area:
- Block: The contractor cannot submit the project through SolarAPP+ and is routed to the jurisdiction's traditional review process
- Record: The project is flagged and the contractor is notified of the applicable parameters, prompting them to review historical and zoning requirements before proceeding
Jurisdictions that have not yet configured ArcGIS layers should communicate any special zoning requirements directly to contractors.
