Introducing Storage Only (ST)
Starting June 1st, SolarAPP+ will support storage permits, with or without an associated solar installation, in select jurisdictions. If you've been waiting to submit storage-only jobs through the platform, you can do that now.
Two configurations, one form
Storage-only — A battery installation at a site with no new solar.
Add-on Storage — Adding a battery to a site that already has solar. This creates a new ST permit, not a revision to your original project.
Installing new solar and a battery together? That's still PV+ST, nothing changes there.
For installers
Select the ST permit type when starting a new project. The form follows the same Eligibility, Fire, and Electrical sections, plus a Structural section based on your jurisdiction's current code year - some do not require structural inputs.
The form is dynamic: your answers shape what's required as you go. For example, selecting a DC-coupled battery in the Electrical section will prompt inverter details, while selecting an ESS unit won't. If you indicate existing solar is on site, you'll be asked to provide details about that equipment.
The below jurisdictions are currently accepting this permit type:
- California City, CA
- Hanford, CA
- Pleasant Hill, CA
- Sonoma County, CA
- El Cajon, CA
- Rancho Cucamonga, CA
- Madera, CA
- Alamosa County, CO
- Blythe, CA
- Tiburon, CA
- Tempe, AZ
- Hesperia, CA
- Guilford, CT
- Simi Valley, CA
- Wasco, CA
- Hemet, CA
- Newport Beach, CA
- Keene, NH
Approval is still instant. Cost is $30.
For jurisdictions
The inspection checklist and approval documents follow the same format as existing permit types.
