SolarAPP+ Feature: Trenching
When to Use This Feature
This feature has been automatically enabled and should be used if your solar installation includes underground conductors. Common scenarios include:
- Installing a solar array on a detached garage or ADU.
- Running electrical conduit underground to connect solar components from a detached structure to the main house.
- Connecting a solar energy system to an electrical pedestal.
🔍 What does this Feature look like?
During the normal project submission process, SolarAPP+ will ask the following question under the "Installation Details" section of the application:
"Will your project include trenching for underground conductors?"
If Yes, the conductors of this section of the system will need to be compliant to the National Electrical Code (NEC) Table 300.5. See below for an example:
Summary of the applicable section of Column 3 NEC Table 300.5
Condition | Minimum Cover Depth |
---|---|
Below 4" thick concrete exterior slab with no vehicle traffic | 4 inches |
Below 2" thick concrete or equivalent | 12 inches |
Dwelling driveways and outdoor parking areas (used only for dwelling-related purposes) | 18 inches |
⚠️ Important to Note:
- Always follow code requirements for your jurisdiction. The burial depth may vary based on local ordinances.
- Ensure proper installation techniques are followed to prevent damage during backfill and over time.
- Ground-mounted systems are currently outside the scope of SolarAPP+.
